Others did more intricate work, tenderly wiping dirt off Buddhist statues and stone carvings.
It’s not the way out-of-towners normally spend the start of the Golden Week holiday, when people commonly leave big cities to visit their hometowns, take hot springs vacations or travel abroad. But after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami decimated northeastern coastal towns and left an estimated 26,000 people dead or missing, these are not normal times.

Kizuna Japan was a wonderful day full of Japanese creative activities, martial art demonstrations and music and an intimate evening in a candlelit church with Japanese Taiko, Music and Dance held at St Mary’s Church in Acton, London.
Kizuna Japan raised £4,600 that day but the most wonderful experience was that so many kind, generous and open hearted people came together to do what they could to help those in Japan who have suffered such unimaginable devastation.

ジャマイカのミュージシャンと日本人ミュージシャンがコラボレーションアルバムを救済に。
‘Starting Over’ and ‘Matsushima’ are the latest efforts by Japanese natives living in Jamaica, Jun Tochino and Yumiko ‘Yumi’ Gabe, to aid in disaster relief funds for victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
The two who are well-known in the Jamaican music industry approached several artistes with the idea to do a song of which the proceeds will go to the relief fund and they said many of reggae’s great legends stepped up right away to lend their talent and names to the worthy cause.
“Me and Jun, we were thinking what we can do because we are so far from Japan. We are involved in reggae music a lot here, so we a use music to help,” Yumi told the STAR.

It is already one month since an earthquake of unprecedented scale and tsunami hit the north eastern part of Japan off the Pacific Ocean on 11 March, causing catastrophic devastation. Thirteen thousand precious lives were lost, and fourteen thousand people are still missing. About one hundred and fifty thousand people are obliged to spend difficult days and nights, living in evacuation shelters, many of them having lost their homes. Several coastal cities were completely demolished. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, damaged by the tsunami, continues to be a source of concern, and the residents within a 30km radius are being evacuated. While this unprecedented crisis still continues, I deeply appreciate the heartfelt condolences and sympathy expressed by so many people, as well as the heart-warming encouragement and support extended by the Ethiopian Government and the African Union. As Prime Minister Kan expressed in appreciation, the Japanese people have strengthened their belief that ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed.’ Japan has the experience of a relatively fast recovery from the devastation of the war and has overcome various natural disasters in the past. We will work hard to overcome this tragedy as well.
