Japan’s economy shrank 0.9 percent in the first quarter but recovery is expected between July and September
Just three months ago Japan was plunged into chaos after a cataclysmic earthquake sent a merciless tsunami crashing through towns and cities up and down the east coast.
The unforgiving tide of water obliterated tens of thousands of buildings, devouring almost anything in its path. Thousands of people died and hundreds of bodies have never been recovered.
The heart-breaking images of families desperately searching for loved ones amid the rubble of their homes sent shockwaves around the world.
Now, three months on, these images show the Japanese people remain undaunted by the havoc nature has wreaked on their homeland as step by step they rebuild their nation.

Coming Up on-air June 10 (Fri), 11 (Sat), 12 (Sun)
First episode features on a Japanese photographer Ms. Mayumi Suzuki, who has lost her parents at March 11th Great East Japan Earthquake. Her father was a photographer at a town of Onagawa, Miyagi prefecture.
Ms. Suzuki who now lives in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, returned to her hometown to fill in for him, and decided to work to revive her father’s photo studio and help revitalize the town with her photos. We also followed her exhibition held in New York.

The Support Tohoku Campaign, starting from May 1 to September 11, 2011, is aiming to promote purchase of products from afflicted areas in Tohoku* stricken by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. We believe that after urgent disaster relief and monetary donation, another stage of support is needed for people to stand from the ground, which is revitalization of the local economy.
