ここイギリスでも、東日本大震災についての報道が続いています。多くのイギリス人が、計り知れない自然の破壊力にショックを受けているようで、いったい何が起こってしまったのか、我々はあのような自然災害にどう立ち向かったら良いのか、頭を整理しようと、さまざまな緊急特別番組が放送されています。
チャンネル４で放送されたドキュメンタリー『Japan’s Tsunami: How it happened』やBBC２で放送された『Japan Earthquake:でA Horizon Special with Iain Stewart』は、地震や津波のメカニズムを地質学的・科学的に解明し、また原子力発電所の事故については専門家を呼んで、人体への影響などを追究していきます。
特にBBC２の『Japan Earthquake～』では、今回の地震で倒壊した建物がほとんどなかったことに注目し、日本における耐震性構造建築の技術を挙げ、いかに地震に対して準備しておくことが必要かを説いています。イギリスでは滅多に地震はおきませんし、日本のように自然災害の多い国ではありません。それでも、我々の住む地球が持つパワーがいかにして人類の生活を一瞬にして奪ってしまうのかを目の当たりにし、彼らなりに何か出来ることはないのかと考えているようです。

You Need Me, I Dont Need You (Acoustic)

2011年3月11日に起きた大地震を皮切りに、日本はそれまでの極東の小さくてエキゾチックで、伝統とテクノロジーの共生する国などとは別の視点で、世界の注目を集めることになった。最初の地震のニュースを聞いて、多くの日本人が『いつもの地震。対策は万全。大丈夫。』と思ったのが実情ではないだろうか。そのあとに続く津波、余震、原発事故、放射能汚染、そしてそれらの災害から引き起こる電力不足、水や食べ物への影響、計り知ることのできない不安を誰が想像していただろうか。

この大震災に関して、世界各国でそれぞれの注目点や情報量、やりかたを異にしながらも、様々なメディアが様々な情報を流し、インターネットというツールによってもまた多種多様な情報を各々が目に耳にしている。被害規模や原発問題などもさることながら、欧米の注目をより集めたのはやはり、世界第三位のGNPを誇る先進国である日本がこのような大災害に見舞われたという点であり、彼らにとって発展途上国への災害よりもより現実味をおびていたからであるともいえる。

そのような状況のなか、多くの海外在住日本人たちが 遠く離れたそれぞれの土地で、 抗うことのできない自然の大きな力の前で必死に生き延びようとする母国を想い、少しでも自分たちには何かできないのか、と自問自答する。ここパリでも、コンサート、舞台公演、展示即売会、バザー、など多くのチャリティーイベントが開催されている。

Renowned pianist Noriko Ogawa will be performing a special appeal concert in aid of the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal at Kings Place on Wednesday 30 March. Here she talks about the disaster that has devastated her country and the music she has chosen to perform

I want to raise awareness of a very special lady’s mission to collect crucial items for the estimated 250,000 people displaced by the Tohoku Pacific earthquake on 11th March 2011.
Her name is Caroline Pover and you can find her details here but for ease of reading I’ve copied her latest post here so you can see what she needs and where she is going to be in the UK over the next few weeks.
