From a small Sarasota office park, half a world away from the devastation in Japan, ShelterBox USA is beginning to provide relief.
“It really means hope to a disaster victim,” said Alan Monroe, Volunteer Program Manager for ShelterBox USA.
That hope comes in the form of a 55-gallon green box.
“Basically, what we put in a ShelterBox is everything a family needs to get back on their feet again after a disaster,” said Monroe.
And that starts with the shelter itself, the tent.
“This disaster relief tent is really designed for an extended family of up to ten people.
It’s the most technically advanced aid tent in the world. And really what it’s designed to do is to provide that shelter, and that sense of home for families that lost everything,” explained Monroe.

In outlets ranging from CNN to The New York Times, these experts are discussing the potential dangers at Japan’s nuclear facilities, the physical processes that underlie the formation of a tsunami, the challenges that the public health sector faces in the coming days and weeks, the economic impact of the disaster, and how religion figures in to the way the Japanese people react and deal with a disaster of this magnitude.

Our response team began delivering emergency assistance to survivors in northeastern Japan on March 14, alongside our partner Peace Winds. Today we are providing supplies and support to four tsunami-devastated cities. So far, our emergency response has reached as many as 42,000 Japanese survivors living in shelters. That assistance has included:
Delivery of critical food items including rice and fresh produce to survivors,
Rushing large shelters, tents, kerosene heaters and blankets to keep displaced families warm and safe,
Building a bathing facility for survivors who are housed in schools and community centers, and
Providing supplies such as bedding and kitchen items to hundreds of families who are now moving into temporary housing.
